Virtual Matter [Ambient]
A research-led installation translating a 3D digital environment into physical gallery space.
Exhibited: The Naughton Gallery, QUB
2022
Virtual Matter [Ambient] was developed as a sound-image installation exploring how a digitally constructed environment could be re-encountered through moving image, sound, printed image, colour, scale and duration. The work formed an important stage in Hamilton’s wider research into how sound, image and site shift between physical and digital environments.

Project Description
Virtual Matter [Ambient] was developed as a research-led sound-image installation at the Naughton Gallery, Belfast.
The work began in a 3D digital environment constructed in Blender and was translated into the gallery through moving image, sound, printed image and light. Rather than presenting the digital environment as a self-contained virtual world, the installation tested how its materials, colours, movements and atmospheres could be re-encountered physically through scale, duration and spatial arrangement.
The project was an important stage in Hamilton’s wider research into sound-image relations across physical and digital sites. It explored how sound could give material presence to a digitally constructed space, and how elements generated in software could return to the gallery as image, atmosphere and environment.
In this sense, Virtual Matter [Ambient] functioned as an installation and a practical investigation into how a digital space might become physically present without needing to resolve into a fixed narrative or symbolic meaning.
Presented at the Naughton Gallery, Belfast, the installation brought together multi-channel moving image, sound and printed works derived from a single 3D digital environment.
